Welcome!
Omnilore is a program of OLLI at CSUDH (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University, Dominguez Hills). The program is centered on study / discussion groups (SDGs), which meet on the Beach Cities Health Center/District campus in Redondo Beach. (Click here for BCHC/BCHD maps, photos, and directions.)  A learning-in-retirement community of approximately 300 seniors, we organize study discussion groups that are conceived, planned, and directed by the members. There are no tests or grades. Membership is open to all age 50+ who seek intellectual stimulation and the challenge of shared inquiry.  Attend a required orientation session to learn more about Omnilore and how to join — click here.

Computer Talk  GeezerTyping

Feb. 23, 2017 (Thursday), Noon - 1pm, Suite L8

Topic:  "Protect Yourself and Your Computing Device on the Internet"

Presented by Rick Spillane

The February Computer Working Group talk will be on protecting your self while using computing devices connected to the Internet.  Between Wi-Fi spoofing, keyloggers, and other types of hacking public networks really are cesspools.  But if you're working remotely and need to access sensitive data on your bank's private servers, or checking on Facebook doing so from an unsecured public network like a coffee shop, hotel, or airport Wi-Fi could put that data, your financial security, and other private information at risk.  Many hackers sit in Starbucks, cafes, hotels, and airport looking for people using unprotected devices. We will cover how to protect your IPHONE, IPAD, or laptop when away from home and even at home.  It only needs one successful attack on your Iphone to compromise your data.

Computer Talks are casual noontime presentations devoted to helping Omniloreans improve their computer skills.   They are held on the 4th Thursdays of most months, generally excluding July/August and November/December.  Read more about Omnilore's Computer Talks series on our Computer Talks webpage, and find some of the recent presentation there for viewing or downloading.

I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up For Education and Was Shot By The Taliban by Malala Yousofzai

images/HillbillyElegy-cover.jpg A non-fiction memoir written by the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, I Am Malala tells the story of how a young education activist survived a Taliban bullet.  Ask social scientists how to end global poverty, and they will tell you:  Educate girls.  When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out.  Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.  This book is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

Omnilore's Best Sellers SIG is open to all Omniloreans who are interested in reading and discussing current best sellers, both fiction and non-fiction.  As with any Special Interest Group, there is no need to enroll, no need to do a presentation… just be there on the day and time with enthusiasm, prepared to participate.  Guests are always welcome.

Visit our Interest Groups webpage to read about the purpose and operation of the Best Sellers SIG, and the book(s) chosen for upcoming months.  For suggestions or more information about the Best Sellers SIG, email Best-Sellers@Omnilore.org.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

images/UndergroundRailroad-cover.jpg In this winner of the national Book Award for fiction, we follow the terrifying journey of Cora, fleeing slavery via the Underground Railroad. In the author’s reimagining, this is literally a railroad with underground tracks and locomotives making stops in different states. As Cora travels, she passes through the varieties of the slave experience in America and becomes an observant and determined witness of the “grotesque realm of gentility floating on blood.” Her story is one of the horrors of bondage and a powerful meditation on the history we all share.

Walking Group HikingClipArt

April 21 (Friday), 2017, 10am:  Route To Be Announced

The Walking Group regularly schedules a walk for the morning of the 3rd Friday of even-numbered months, ending with bring-your-own lunch.  As of 2015 the Walking Group started rotating between three or four fairly flat, popular walking routes in various of our South Bay cities.  On occasion, a volunteer may plan a more rigorous hike or field trip on an in-between month (e.g., trekking historic downtown Los Angeles or a PV trail with significant elevation change).  Plans are generally posted about a week ahead, and generally an announcement with walk details is emailed to the membership 5 days ahead..

See our Special Interest Groups webpage and its description of our Walking Group while we're waiting for plans for their next route to be posted here.  Also on the Special Interest Groups webpage are descriptions of the walking routes in our regular rotation, and the criteria for planning new routes.

All Omnilore members (and their guests) are always welcome to participate in our excursions.  We accommodate all speeds of walkers, so give it a try if our next route appeals to you.

Contact Steve Miller if you have questions about the walking group or are willing to plan a hike.

2.  SDG Folders & "FTP TECHIE" TRAINING:   This is taught after basic Equipment Training if there is interest, or upon request to Equipment@Omnilore.org . Or, you may self-teach via the sub-bullets below. Room 7, 12:30pm - 1:30pm

    • CLICK HERE or on the orange "SDG Folders" button at the top of this webpage for more descriptive materials about SDG Folders on this website.

  • The Omnilore membership year runs from September 1 through August 31. The spring classes start the first week of January, the summer classes begin the first week of May, and the fall classes commence the first week of September.

  • Omnilore is run by volunteers. A Board of Directors and Standing Committees keep the organization running smoothly. Members propose course offerings.

  • Members are expected to be active participants in their Study/Discussion Groups (SDGs). Giving a presentation in the courses one takes is a requirement.

  • Prior to joining, new members are required to attend a New Members Orientation Session (see below). This requirement is necessary in order to fully understand the organization and to receive tips on "How to Succeed as an Omnilore Member."

  • Prospective members are urged to "sit in" on an Omnilore SDG class before joining the organization. We want to make sure that we are the right "fit" for you!

  • Omnilore thrives based on the efforts of its membership, all of whom are volunteers.  Besides the SDGs themselves and the member volunteers who coordinate each SDG's classroom activities, volunteers are needed to help plan and execute diverse planning and communication activities that keep Omnilore vital, interesting, and exciting.  Examples include developing the curriculum, putting together our bimonthly newsletter, maintaining this website, and the Omnilore Board of Directors which oversees everything.   Whatever your background, there's probably a place you can help out – both leadership and product-producing positions.  See our separate Volunteer Opportunities webpage for more details and how to get involved in making Omnilore go.

Omnilore Membership Fees:

Omnilore annual membership fees are $100.00 per person, which includes a required $30/person OLLI membership fee.  The $100 provides all Omnilore communications electronically – via email and website postings.  There is a $20 surcharge for members who prefer to receive communications by USPS mail, making their fees $120.  Omnilore fees cover membership and full participation in study/discussion groups, club activities and more for the full academic year.

NOTE: The Omnilore membership fee includes all the benefits of OLLI@CSUDH membership (see below).

Omnilore's New Home as of AUGUST 1, 2016

Beach Cities Health Center/District — 514 N. Prospect Avenue, Redondo Beach

http://Omnilore.org/images/StreetSign-at-StopLight-closeup.jpgOMNILORE'S NEW HOME:  On August 1, 2016, all Omnilore classes and many of our other activities moved to new classrooms in the Beach Cities Health Center (BCHC) campus (aka Beach Cities Health District, BCHD), which is located at 514 N. Prospect Avenue in Redondo Beach.  BCHC/BCHD is on the east (actually northeast) side of N. Prospect Ave. which bends Northwest/Southeast there.   Driving from the north, BCHD is approx. 0.3 mile south of 190th/Anita or 0.1 mi. south of Beryl.   Driving from the south, it is 1 mile north of Torrance Blvd. or about 0.3 mi. north of Del Amo Blvd.  Look for the street sign saying "Beach Cities Health District" (and an arrow) at the stop light; this is the main entrance to the complex and several parking options.

OUR BCHC/BCHD NEIGHBORS:  We are sharing the campus with a variety of medical facilities including Cancer Care Associates and Silverado Assisted Living,  seniors organizations, Beach Cities Preschool, and the Center for Health and Fitness (gym-yoga-pilates) — making for a compatible fit with Omnilore.

OMNILORE'S CLASSROOMS:  We have two dedicated classrooms (signage saying CSUDH "Suite L8," formerly known as "Suite A"; and "Suite L9," formerly known as "Suite B") that are available to us for extended hours, 7 days a week, year-round – excepting CSUDH possibly scheduling an occasional evening or weekend Extension class in the rooms.  These two classrooms are on the lower (or "Basement") level of Building 514, as indicated on the satellite map (3rd image) below.  Suite L8 is the larger of the two and will accommodate at least 25 members comfortably, plus it has a walled-off storage area at the rear with a sink and counter, plus very ample space for storage cabinets, our equipment carts, and other types of storage.  Suite L9 should fit classes up to 18 members.

images/Parking-Sign-510-514.jpgPARKING:  There is ample parking, in two parking garages and many above-ground spaces on the BCHD campus.  The underground parking garage situated west/southwest of our Building 514 (with its entrance labeled "1" on the 3rd graphic below) is most likely to have open spaces, especially down at the 2nd and 3rd levels down.  See the annotated satellite-map (that 3rd graphic below) below for the parking garages and how to get from them into Building 514 and where our classrooms are from each entrance.

MAPQUEST:  Here is a Mapquest link to the Beach Cities Health Center/District campus, allowing you to enter your home address (or any other starting point) and then generating detailed driving directions for you by clicking the "Get Directions" button and entering your starting address. (Click Here for equivalent Google maps view and its "Directions" button.)

MAPS & DIRECTIONS:  The first 2 images below are street maps showing the environment of BCHD, the 1st one at about a 5-mile view of the vicinity with its boxed area showing the location of the 2nd image which provides driving directions from nearby major streets.   The 3rd image is the annotated satellite map of the BCHC/BCHD campus, showing parking, Building 514 entrances, and directions for navigating to our classrooms.  Click on the first two images below for larger versions; click on the 3rd image (satellite map) for a version removing the large rectangular boxes of text, in order to show the more complete aerial view of the BCHC/BCHD campus.

OVERFLOW PARKING:  Occasionally the BCHC/BCHD parking shown above might be full, in which case the large above-ground parking lot to the north of the buildings is accessed by driving (1) between Buildings 514 and 520, or (2)  that south-most entrance off N. Prospect (south of the stop light) and driving around the east side of the #2-#3 parking garage, or (3) around the west side Building 520(Click Here for expanded aerial view showing this overflow parking and the driveways leading there through other parking lots.)
